How to stream torrents to your Apple TV, no jailbreak needed

TorrentTV

A new Mac app called TorrenTV was recently released to allow users to stream torrents directly to the Apple TV. The app, which begins playing movies immediately via a simple drag and drop of a .torrent file, streams to the Apple TV, even if the device isn’t jailbroken.

Even better is the fact that TorrenTV requires zero setup. As long as your Mac and Apple TV share the same Wi-Fi network, TorrenTV will begin streaming video to your Apple TV almost immediately.

Of course, being that we don’t condone piracy, the use of such an app would have its limits. Thankfully, there are legitimate videos available via torrents, which can thus be streamed directly to your Apple TV. Have a look inside for more information.... Read the rest of this post here

BrightPlayer: add brightness slider and rotation lock to iOS video player

BrightPlayer-tweak-header

The idea for BrightPlayer originally came from a Reddit post in /r/jailbreak, where a jailbreaker pitched his tweak concept to any interested developers out there. The result is a handy little jailbreak tweak for adjusting display brightness and toggling rotation lock from the iOS video player.

BrightPlayer is a great example of a simple tweak that adds a small amount of convenience to a certain area of iOS. I’ve quite frequently found myself having to invoke Control Center to up my display brightness when launching a video, and all too often I’m toggling rotation lock to keep the video in landscape. BrightPlayer fixes these issues by adding options for both screen brightness levels and rotation lock directly into iOS’s video player…... Read the rest of this post here

QuickFolders: a more efficient way to launch apps in folders

QuickFolders Featured

QuickFolders is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that will allow users to launch apps contained in folders using a single tap and hold gesture. The tweak, which should be hitting Cydia any day now, will also allow users to venture into nested folders, switch folder pages, and exit folders all in one motion.

We’ve gotten our hands on a preview build of QuickFolders and have put it through its paces. While it isn’t quite as stable as it’ll hopefully be when the tweak officially launches, the potential is undeniable. Have a look at our full video walkthrough after the break for more information.... Read the rest of this post here

Rumor: iPhone 6 launching on October 14, an ‘immense’ day for Apple

Sharknado: The Video Game attacks the App Store

Sharknado The Game 1

After much trepidation, I finally decided to give the goofy action film “Sharknado” a try. If you haven’t seen it, the movie is about a freak storm that lands hundreds of man-eating sharks into the greater Los Angeles area. Hilarity ensues. It is one of those so-bad-it’s-good type movies.

Apple’s $3 billion acquisition of Beats Music, a music-streaming service, and Beats Electronics, a highly lucrative premium headphone business, is nearing its completion.

How to grab Mac screenshots like a pro

OS X Mavericks (Grab icon, full size)

Ever since the dawn of the Computer Age, screenshots have been essential. Images showing software in action are used all over the web, on social media and in specialized magazines.

Blog about software, you’ll need screenshots. Putting together a useful how-to like this one, are we? Good, you’ll need even more screenshots.

Want to get your point across in an unambiguous manner? You’re definitely going to need memorable screenshots to illustrate your point effectively.

There are plenty applications, both paid and free, which allow you to grab screenshots, such as Skitch from Evernote, for example. But allow me to let you in on a dirty little secret: you don’t need any of them.

Assuming you’re in the vast majority of the population whose needs don’t go beyond grabbing screens, or are among the group that has no use for advanced annotation and image management capabilities, Apple has you covered.

I myself have never used a third-party app to grab screenshots. How’s so? Because OS X sports a compelling set of built-in shortcuts for taking different types of screen images in an instant, without having to even launch any kind of app.

Still, it’s surprising just how many folks are totally oblivious to the fact they can capture Mac screenshots. That being said, we’ve reckoned to do something about it.

This comprehensive tutorial will teach you how to take screenshots on your Mac like a pro and have fun in the process.... Read the rest of this post here

How to quickly switch between Mavericks and Yosemite beta

how-to-switch-os-header

Following Apple’s release of a public beta of OS X Yosemite, iDB reader Antony Verros sent us some code he wrote in AppleScript, which allows users to quickly restart a computer and automatically boot up in the installed OS of choice. For anyone who installed the OS X Yosemite beta on a separate partition, this is an easy solution for booting up into Yosemite or Mavericks without having to hold down the Option key on boot to select the desired partition. The script can even be tweaked to work with BootCamp.

While it’s mostly a matter of time-saving convenience, this method can prove to be quite advantageous over time, particularly for users who find themselves frequently switching between OSs, whether it be a Yosemite beta, Mavericks, or Windows 7. Having an easily accessible application for booting into another OS while making a sandwich or refilling a cup of coffee, versus having to wait around to hold down Option, can be highly useful…... iPhone could automatically silence alerts when you exercise, Apple patent hints

Apple patent (DND while excercising 001)

Notifications on mobile devices are both a curse and a blessing. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would diminish the value in receiving a timely notification about an important event while on the go.

On the other hand, virtually every app wants to send notifications these days. Even though iOS does offer some granularity as to the times of day when these alerts are allowed to buzz your device, by no measure is this sufficient.

An Apple patent publicized by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) last Thursday gives an insight into Apple’s research efforts that would automatically enable a Do Not Disturb mode (added in iOS 6) when the device has determined that a user is working out, saving you a few taps…... This is what new ‘EU Internet’ switch in iOS 8 Beta 4 does for you

The most recent beta of iOS 8 has introduced an easily overlooked new option under the Cellular section of the iOS Settings app. It’s called ‘EU Internet,’ applies only to those traveling in the European Union and is a bit puzzling.

As a quick recap, exorbitant roaming charges for data downloads in the European Union have already been reduced in an effort to make prices more realistic for those using mobile devices outside their home country.

That’s just the beginning as the European parliament recently passed a new regulation, currently needing an approval by the Council of the European Union, that promises to render all roaming charges in the EU illegal by December 2015.

T-Mobile unveils time-limited $100 per month family plan with 10GB LTE data

John Legere (Uncarrier 001)

“Leaving my office last week, I pulled alongside a bus covered with yet another ad for AT&T’s ‘Best-Ever Pricing’ for families,” writes T-Mobile USA’s outspoken CEO John Legere in a blog post Monday.

As is his wont, Legere couldn’t resist offering a scathing critique of AT&T’s family plan, calling it “funny” because “their deal is no deal at all” compared to the pricing of T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Family Plan.

Regardless, Legere went on to announce a new competitive offering which will be launching later this month to give a family of four a total of ten gigabytes of high-speed LTE data (2.5GB each) in exchange for a cool hundred bucks per month. A skill I always envy is an artist’s ability to capture nature through a camera lens. Smart Search spices up Spotlight search on iOS 7

smart search

Spotlight can be used to search for content (music, app, mail etc.) on your iPhone, iPad or iPod and it can be accessed by swiping down the Home screen. However, iOS 8 takes the feature to a whole new level by allowing users to search for an iTunes song, App Store app, website, Wikipedia entry and much more directly from Spotlight.

Inspired by iOS 8 Spotlight search, Smart Search is a new jailbreak tweak that improves the functionality of Spotlight search on jailbroken iOS 7 devices by expanding its search capability. Upgrading to a 4K monitor: enjoy Retina quality graphics on an external display

Dell UP2414Q Three Monitors

As many of you know, I’m rocking a 13″ Retina MacBook Pro, and I love it. The screen is killer, it’s fairly fast, and it’s portable.

But as I begin to take on more “intense” projects, I’m starting to realize that I simply don’t have enough screen real estate to be the most productive I can be. I need an external monitor.

BlackBerry, Dell not concerned about Apple-IBM deal

blackberry john chen

You would think hearing that Apple is teaming up with IBM to push further into the enterprise space would be worrisome for competitors. But both Dell and BlackBerry, who are each in the process of reshaping their businesses, say they’re unfazed.

In an interview this week, Dell’s John Swainson said that while he thought the announcement “made for a good press release,” he fails to see how the pair can prosper. Likewise, BlackBerry CEO John Chen likened the deal to “two elephants dancing.”... Read the rest of this post here
