Apple to release Q3 2014 financial results on July 22nd

Q3 FY14 Earnings Release

Apple just announced via its Investor Relations portal that the company will be discussing financial results of its third fiscal quarter on July 22nd, during a conference call starting at 2:00 p.m. PT / 5:00 p.m ET. Based on past behavior, it is safe to assume that Apple will be publishing a press release with all relevant financial information a few minutes prior to the call’s beginning.

During the conference call, Apple will discuss basic sales numbers and financials for its line of products, but don’t expect them to reveal anything about future products. We will of course be on deck to report any information that might be relevant to our readers…... Read the rest of this post here

iOS 7.1.2 released with improved iBeacon connectivity and bug fixes

iOS 7.1.2

Apple has seeded iOS 7.1.2 as an over-the-air update and through iTunes for compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. The latest software version includes improved iBeacon connectivity and stability, fixes a bug with data transfer for certain third-party accessories and corrects a major Mail attachment privacy issue. The full changelog has been posted ahead.

While we have heard from iOS developer iH8sn0w that the Chinese tool Pangu is forwards compatible with iOS 7.1.2, we highly recommend that users remain on iOS 7.1.1 or below to preserve their jailbreak until we are able to further confirm that claim and provide an official step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak.... 1Password with Touch ID authentication and Safari Share sheet support shown off

1Password (Touch ID integration 001)

A big part of what makes iOS 8 so great is how Apple is finally opening up its mobile operating system to developers, more than ever before.

Take Touch ID, for example. With a little help from the iOS 8 SDK and the new Local Authentication Framework, third-party apps can tap Touch ID to authenticate a user in a safe manner as fingerprint data is protected and never accessed by iOS or apps.

Brands such as PayPal have pledged to update their apps with Touch ID authentication when iOS 8 gets released for public consumption this Fall and now a beta tester has posted screenshots and a short video of Touch ID integration in 1Password for iOS, the popular password management program by AgileBits…... How to jailbreak iOS 7.1.x with Pangu 1.1 on Windows [video]

Pangu 1.1

The highly anticipated Pangu 1.1 update was just today released for both Windows and Mac users. Obviously, the big news here was Mac compatibility, as Mac users were left without a usable version after the initial Windows-only version of Pangu 1.1 was released.

But Windows users should be happy too, as version 1.1 of Pangu brings with it English text that makes it easier to follow along in the jailbreak process. The update also gets rid of the nefarious checkbox that allowed pirated software to be easily installed on your device.

Pangu 1.1 is a streamlined version of the original tool. If you’ve been on the fence about using it, then perhaps this latest update will ease your concerns. Check inside to view our step-by-step jailbreak tutorial for Pangu 1.1 on Windows.... Read the rest of this post here

The best apps for taking selfies

I actually hate the word “selfie.” It is one of those trendy words that has stuck around much longer than I would have wished it to. It caught on, like a virus, and spread across the world. Even the President of the United States has been known to use it.

I have to admit defeat here, and use the word to describe this week’s list. We know you love to take pictures of yourself with a new outfit, a funny hat, or while eating a burrito. So, here is our list of best apps for taking selfies…... Read the rest of this post here

Users who weren’t able to jailbreak their iOS 7.1.x devices because of the lack of Mac support for the Pangu jailbreak tool can rejoice. Earlier today, the Pangu team released Pangu 1.1 with a few improvements and bug fixes. Most notably, Pangu 1.1.0 brings support for Mac and is now available in English.

Shutter stores every photo you take in the cloud for free

Shutter 1

We’ve all been there. We are on vacation or at an event, snapping pictures or shooting video clips of our kids doing something funny, when we run out of storage space on our iPhone. There are plenty of options for saving pictures on social networking sites or in iCloud. However, we don’t necessarily want to share hundreds of pictures of the 5K we just ran on Facebook and Apple’s free iCloud storage is limited. Even Dropbox limits your free storage to 2GB.

Shutter by StreamNation aims to solve our storage needs by allowing users to take photos and video from within the app and automatically store content in an unlimited free cloud-based service…... Read the rest of this post here

Seagate’s Backup Plus line offers various storage options in small package

Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB

Seagate is the world’s largest provider of external hard drives by volume. Personally, I have around five or more scattered around my home, office and desk–too many to attempt to round up for an accurate count. They make great LAN, portable, wireless, and desktop class storage. Of course Seagate makes internal drives as well, but my experience with them is less versed. As I have witnessed, assumedly along with others familiar with the product line, Seagate is now producing a more creative approach to an otherwise simple storage device.

External storage, as a whole, used to be a simple drag-and-drop venture. Arguably, it was a simpler time. I really appreciate the ability to just plug in a drive and drop stuff to it. However, with the advent of social media, home networking, and some creative thinking, external storage is now something much different. Considering the Seagate Backup Plus line of products, which I first discovered at CES 2014, social sharing and saving are now integrated with the drives…... Read the rest of this post here

Facebook-owned Instagram, which in March surpassed 200 million active users and 20 billion photos, used to store user-shared snaps and videos on Amazon’s EC2 cloud computing service since 2010, but not anymore.

It’s now come to light that the social networking behemoth back in Spring stealthily moved all your photos from Amazon into its own data center, and no one even noticed.

Google unveils Gmail API: your email apps are about to get a lot faster and smarter

Gmail

If you ever set up a Gmail account over IMAP in a third-part client like Mailbox, you’re painfully aware that the experience is nowhere near Gmail’s web app on desktop.

It’s not Google’s fault – Gmail’s support for IMAP is rather smooth. To put it bluntly, IMAP just wasn’t designed with all of Gmail’s advanced features in mind.

For starters, typical operations over IMAP are noticeably slower compared to Gmail. Worse, IMAP does not support full searching of Gmail accounts and important features specific to Gmail – such as starring or archiving – frequently behave erratically over IMAP.

Realizing it doesn’t want developers to be bogged down by IMAP’s limitations, Google today at its I/O conference released the first beta of the official Gmail API.

It’s a pretty big deal and here’s why…... Read the rest of this post here

The Pangu jailbreak team is hard at work on updated versions of its jailbreak tool

Console-grade Hellraid: The Escape powered by Unreal Engine 3 hitting iOS on July 10

If I had a nickel every time a developer pitched their iOS game with the overused “console style graphics” phrase, I would be filthy rich by now.

Yet in the case of Hellraid: The Escape, an upcoming action role-playing game (RPG) from Techland and Shortbreak Studios, the catch phrase rings true.

Indeed, the forthcoming iPhone and iPad title does seem to “push the boundaries of quality gaming on mobile devices even further.”

Originally slated for release in June, the game has been pushed back to July as developers needed more time to work out the kinks and polish up the game’s visuals.

Nest Developer Program (teaser 001)

Nest Labs, the Google-owned maker of the popular Nest thermostat and smoke detector, has signaled its intention to open up its technology to third-party developers by launching the Nest Developer Program last September.
