Tamil Nadu-based company iVoice Enterprise is moving forward with its challenge to Apple’s ‘iPhone’ trademark in India, reports PatentlyApple. The firm has asked the country’s Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) to remove the trademark from their registry.

The initial complaint, known officially as a “rectification petition,” was filed on October 20, and many figured it would be immediately tossed out. U.S. Court says phone passcodes are protected under the law

Resized PasscodeTime

Criminals should protect their iPhones with a passcode, not Touch ID, as a Virginia District Court has determined that passcodes are protected under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution while fingerprints are not, according to a report Friday by Hampton Roads.

The Fifth Amendment protects citizens from self-incrimination so a phone is protected under the law because otherwise it would require a defendant to divulge knowledge. Put simply, a Circuit Court judge has ruled that a criminal defendant can be compelled to reveal their fingerprint but not the passcode, so that police could search their mobile phone.... Apple changes its mind again, will allow calculator widgets in Notification Center after all

Yes. No. YES!

These three words sum up the situation of PCalc, a powerful calculator app that features a Notification Center widget, whose developer was asked by Apple yesterday to remove as it apparently wasn’t in line with App Store rules.

How to use a passcode with the iOS 8.x jailbreak

iOS 8 Jailbreak passcode fix cydia substrate

At this point in time, running Cydia on a jailbroken iPhone can still be a bit confusing for users who aren’t always knee-deep in this stuff. One of the biggest issues encountered when running Cydia on a jailbroken iOS 8 device at the moment involves using the passcode and Touch ID.

After installing Cydia on a jailbroken iOS 8 device, many are reporting that establishing a passcode sends them into a bootloop. I verified that I encountered the same issue.

Let me just preface this by saying that the problems encountered here are no fault of the Pangu team or of Saurik. This jailbreak is a work in progress, and we’ve been advised that the jailbreak is only for developers at the moment. That said, many of you are adventurous and want to take the plunge as soon as possible; as do I.

In this video, I share an unsanctioned workaround to the boot loop issue. I show you how to establish a passcode on a device with Cydia and Cydia Substrate installed. I’ve tested this out, and have recorded the entire Cydia installation process for your convenience. Have a look inside for the full tutorial.... Read the rest of this post here

Let’s Talk Jailbreak 79: Pangu lives!

ReachAll brings Reachability-inspired functionality to the iPhone 5s and older devices

ReachAll Screenshot

ReachAll is a recently released jailbreak tweak that brings one of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus’ flagship features—Reachability—to older devices. Reachability, as you’re likely aware of, allows you to shift down the contents of the iPhone’s interface via a double-tap on the iPhone’s Touch ID sensor. For large devices like the iPhone 6, this feature was added with one-handed usage in mind.

Obviously, a smaller device like the iPhone 5s lacks the need for such a feature out of the box, but don’t tell that to jailbreak developers. ReachAll not only brings Reachability to the most likely candidate, (the iPhone 5s is the only Touch ID enabled iPhone without Reachability) but it also works, thanks to a special “Tap Box” option, on older devices like the iPhone 5.

When you do the multiplication, it’s going to matter.” He estimates that iPhone sales are adding one-quarter to one-third of a percentage point to the annualized growth rate of the gross domestic product.

How to stop OS X Yosemite from asking for a password after waking your Mac

iPad Air 2 costs roughly the same to build as its predecessor

ifixit air 2

Apple’s latest iPad Air 2 costs roughly the same as its predecesor, an analysys from the research firm IHS quoted Tuesday by Re/Code has determined. An entry-level Wi-Fi-only model with sixteen gigabtes of storage costs an estimated $275 in parts, excluding costs associated with sales, marketing, advertising, packaging, software licensees, reasearch and development and so forth.

It’s interesting that Apple pays about $60 for NAND flash chips in the high-end 128GB model and only $9.20 on memory for the low-end 16 GB devices. At retail, the difference between the 128 and 16GB model is $300. “Apple reaps a pretty good profit for all that memory,” IHS analyst Andrew Rassweiler observed.... Cydia Substrate updated yet again, this time fixing bugs with OpenSSH and other processes

Cydia Substrate 0.9.5015

As expected, Saurik continues to work tirelessly on Cydia and all of its parts, including the uber-important Cydia Substrate. The latest update, which rings in at version 0.9.5015 comes mere hours after the 0.9.5014 update.

While the previous update aimed to squash many festering bugs, and did so successfully, it also introduced another bug which caused some process, like OpenSSH, not to start. Obviously this was a huge issue that needed to be fixed quick, since OpenSSH is used by lots of jailbreakers as a means to communicate with their jailbroken devices and to transfer files. As expected, Saurik responded accordingly.... Read the rest of this post here

How to use AirDrop between OS X Yosemite and iOS 8

AirDrop

AirDrop is a file transmission tool that first debuted in OS X Lion. Prior to iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, the AirDrop protocols between Mac and iOS were not compatible. This incompatibility made AirDrop worthless in the eyes of many, as most casual users would prefer to exchange data between a Mac and an iOS device, instead of two Macs.

The AirDrop issue has been solved in iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. AirDrop now works beautifully between a Mac and an iPhone, or a Mac and an iPad. It’s a great way to make quick transmissions between local devices. Watch our video walkthrough after the break for a demonstration of AirDrop in action.

Here’s what the Apple Watch UI looks like on an iPhone [video]

Apple Watch UI iPhone

When the Apple Watch was revealed, it displayed a fairly drastic UI change from the way a typical iPad or iPhone works. The UI showcased many app icons on screen and once, and they could be zoomed in and out via the watch’s digital crown.

That UI seems to fit in fairly well with the watch, given that device’s limitations on screen real estate. But how would a similar UI work on the iPhone? Would it even work at all?

Developer Lucas Menge helps to answer that question via an open source mockup showcasing the Apple Watch UI on his iPhone 5s. The result is a fairly eye-opening display that may convince some that the Apple Watch UI could indeed work on a large screen device. Have a look inside at the awesome video, and let us know what you think.... Read the rest of this post here
