Happy new year

Happy New Year Champagne

And just like that, a year went by again.

I can still remember last year at the same time, when I started making resolutions for the new year that was about to start. As it turns out, I didn’t follow through most of them.

As we grow older, and as our lives get busier, it seems harder and harder to find time to do the things we really want to do. Various obligations make our days shorter, sometimes forcing us to miss the essential parts of life.

I’ll consider myself lucky for doing something I love for a living, which really makes my days more enjoyable than the average worker, I assume. I’m also very lucky to have such an amazing family. My daughter, my wife, and our future baby are constant reminders that life is wonderful and that you should enjoy every single moment. Carpe diem!

Maybe I’m drifting away from the original intent of this post.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that life is short, so I hope you’re getting the best of it. A new year is the right time to look back at where you’re at in life and where you want to get to. Maybe it’s a good occasion to make slight changes and make sure you’re on the right track to do whatever you want to do.

On behalf of everybody at iDB, I would like to wish you a happy new year. I hope this new year will bring you health, wealth, love, and everything else in between. I also want to thank you for being a loyal or occasional reader. Whether you read iDB every single day or you’re just stopping by, my message to you is the same.

Happy new year!

Barrel, the flagship jailbreak tweak has been updated for iOS 7

Barrel iOS 7

If you’ve been around jailbreaking for any measurable amount of time, the name “Barrel” has a significant meaning for you. It’s the tweak that I, and many others, view as the flagship jailbreak tweak. It’s the tweak that represents jailbreaking as a whole.

Barrel is the type of tweak that you use to convince skeptical friends that they should jailbreak, and often the end result is that they do. No, Barrel isn’t a tweak that will improve the usability of your device, such as biteSMS’ quick reply. It’s not a practical release like iFile, or Safari Download Manager. But it’s still one of the first tweaks that come to mind when a new jailbreak arrives.

I’m happy to say that Barrel has been updated to support iOS 7. In fact, it works beautifully on my iPhone 5s. If you’re new to jailbreaking and don’t know what Barrel is, then I invite you to step inside and enjoy the visual roller coaster.(...)

How to make the volume HUD transparent on iOS 7

TransparentVolume 01

The little heads up display that appears when you adjust the volume on the iPad or iPhone is often the subject of tweaking when it comes to the jailbreak community. The latest tweak to alter the look of the volume HUD is called TransparentVolume—a jailbreak tweak that adds transparency to the HUD’s background.

Once installed, a new preference panel for TransparentVolume is placed in the stock Settings app. From here, you can use a slider to adjust the background transparency. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside to see how it works.(...)

The best apps of 2013: iDB readers’ choice

best apps 2013

For the past month or so, we’ve been compiling lists of what we think are the best apps of 2013. Divided into specific categories, each list is composed of 10 apps handpicked by iDB editors. For each category, iDB readers were able to vote for their favorite app, helping us come up with what we believe to be the best of the best apps of 2013.

In order to be eligible, apps had to have been released in 2013. This ensured that we were putting new apps under the spotlight, rather than always seeing the same ones at the top.

With your help, we present you the best of the best apps of 2013…(...)

Apple denies knowledge of NSA’s iPhone program

Touch ID success

Yesterday, a trove of secret documents was released regarding the NSA and its ongoing spying on citizens both abroad and here in the US. One of the programs mentioned, called DROPOUTJEEP, is particularly scary as it can give the Agency complete control of any iPhone.

These are some pretty serious allegations made against the NSA and maybe more-so Apple, who either has several unknown security holes in its mobile OS or is consciously giving the NSA access. Well the company just responded to these claims, and it appears to be the former…(...)

iFile updated to fix broken “Open With” support, iOS 6 app icons

iFile Open With Dialogue

Yesterday, we told you about the update to iFile. The legendary app was redesigned to fit the mold of iOS 7, and it looked glorious in doing so. But, as tends to be the case with large updates, it featured a few bugs that needed to be fixed.

The first bug, and the most glaring flaw with the iFile update, involved the app’s Open With support in the attributes editor. When you tried to open a file using the Open With dialogue, you were left with a blank screen. This has been fixed.

Along with the fix to Open With support, comes a fix for the iFile icon in firmwares lesser than iOS 7. As you all know, the iFile icon was “iOS 7-ified” with the latest update, taking on a flatter appearance and a bolder look. While the new app icon fits in perfectly with iOS 7, it doesn’t fit in very well with older firmware. This oversight has been fixed, and iFile now features an app icon that’s appropriate for the version of iOS that is being used.(...)

Let’s Talk iOS 009: A year in review

Having issues with Cydia Substrate? Try this

Cydia Substrate Barrel

I woke up this morning to a pleasant surprise: Mobile Substrate had been updated to support iOS 7 on ARM64 CPUs, making it compatible with all of the latest Apple devices like the iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and iPad mini with Retina Display. As you can imagine, I rushed to the office without even brushing my teeth (I know, gross) and installed the new Cydia Substrate package that appeared on Cydia.

Unfortunately for me, none of the tweaks and apps that I had installed began to work after Cydia Substrate was updated. I think it may, and I’m just grasping at straws here, have to do with the fact that I was impatient, and already had a bunch of stuff installed that didn’t work in the first place. To fix this issue, I took a fairly logical approach; I completely uninstalled Substrate and reinstalled it from scratch. Have a look inside for more details.(...)

Samsung Got A Bigger Tablet Boost For Christmas Than Apple, According To Onswipe

onswipe tablet christmas

Touchscreen publishing company Onswipe has good news for Samsung. As Onswipe’s Chief Marketing Officer Jason Baptiste put it in an email, “Samsung clearly won Christmas when it comes to tablets.”

Specifically, the company looked at visitors to Onswipe-optimized sites for the period of Dec. 26 to Dec. 29 in comparison to Dec. 19-22, as a way to measure the growth that different tablet platforms saw over Christmas. The results? Samsung’s Galaxy tablets grew 50.4 percent, Nexus 6 tablets grew 33.8 percent, iPads grew 20.4 percent, and Kindle Fires grew 19.5 percent.

Now, the fact that Onswipe focused on percentage growth is an important caveat here. After all, Samsung was presumably starting from (much) less, so it didn’t need to sell as many tablets to see significant growth.

It’s also interesting to see the line about Samsung’s victory coming from Baptiste, who recently wrote a blog post telling people to “stop believing the fairy tales about the iPad’s demise.” I asked him if the data made him reconsider the post, and he said no: “Though they enjoyed more growth post Holidays, Samsung is still very tiny compared to the iPad and the same goes for the rest of Android. What will be interesting is seeing whether people still use Android tablets 90 days out from now.”

Baptiste also provided some numbers about usage. He said the average session time from Samsung users was 3 minutes and 9 seconds after Christmas, down from 3:32 before. On iPad, the average session was 4:03, compared to 4:12 before. And the Kindle Fire had the longest session time on average, 4:51.

As for how many people this data represents, Baptiste said Onswipe (which recently upgraded its platform) reaches 31 million unique visitors each month on the mobile web.

Apple’s App Store data shows iOS 7 adoption is now at 78%

iOS 7 teaser (iPhone 5s ad 003)

Apple has updated its App Store support page for developers this week to reflect new data regarding iOS 7 adoption. According to the company’s usage data, the new operating system is running on 78% of iOS devices accessing the App Store.

That’s a nice little jump up from earlier this month, when Apple noted that iOS 7 adoption had hit 74%. The move can be attributed to the success of the iPhone and iPad over the holiday season and [possibly] the just-released iOS 7 jailbreak…(...)

Mobile Substrate updated with support for iOS 7 and ARM64

iPhone iOS 7 Jailbreak

Great news for jailbroken folks on newer iPhones and iPads this morning. Saurik just announced that a new version of Mobile Substrate is out with support for iOS 7 and ARM64. The update will allow developers to update their jailbreak tweaks to work with the newer hardware and software.

This is a huge deal because up until now, those of us on devices like the iPhone 5s or the Retina iPad mini have been extremely limited as to what we could do after jailbreaking—I don’t currently have a single tweak installed. But now that this new Substrate is out, that should begin to change…(...)

Getting stuck with Evasi0n 7 at Configuring System 2/2? Try this

Configuring System 2 2

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I never got around to posting a Windows jailbreak video tutorial for Evasi0n 7. Usually, I’m on such a tutorial like white on rice, and I take pride in helping our faithful readers through the entire jailbreak process, regardless of their platform of choice. This time, however, things were a bit different.

Although we were able to post our Mac video tutorial in a short turnaround time, the Windows video tutorial was nowhere to be found. Why? Well, to be frank, it’s because I couldn’t get it working.

I could start the jailbreak perfectly fine, and I never ran into any error messages, but I just could not for the life of me get past the Configuring System 2/2 step during Evasi0n’s jailbreak process. It’s like everything would just come to a screeching halt as soon as it got to this step.

As you’ve probably figured out by now, I was finally able to work past this issue. The headline kind of gives it away, but the solution isn’t something I can take credit for at all. The solution is actually thanks, at least in part, to someone very close to Saurik. Check inside for my explanation and video walkthrough showcasing how to jailbreak iOS 7 on Windows.(...)

Speed up iOS 7 animations with NoSlowAnimations

Speed up ios 7

One of the primary complaints that I hear about iOS 7, outside of the obvious beef with the app icons, is the slow animation speed. iOS 7 uses animations to add a sense of depth to the interface, and I’m a big fan of the effect. Unfortunately, the effect does add some perceptual slowness to the experience, whether the slowness actually exists or not.

NoSlowAnimations is a brand new jailbreak tweak that significantly speeds up the animations found in iOS 7. Watch our full video walkthrough after the break…

Leaked documents show the NSA can gain nearly complete access to your iPhone

The FitBit App Now Turns The iPhone 5s Into A FitBit

Screenshot 2013-12-30 15.09.39

Fitbit has just released a major update to its iOS app for iPhone 5s, allowing the smartphone itself to track steps, distance and burned calories.

These are basic features, and just a fraction of the metrics provided by one of Fitbit’s own hardware devices, such as the Fitbit handheld or the Fitbit Flex wristband. With a Fitbit Force, for example, you can track all the basic information as well as flights of stairs climbed and sleep. Plus, it acts as a watch feeding you the information on a digital screen.

Still, the accompanying app has always been an integral part of the Fitbit hardware experience, as it offers a dashboard for every metric as well as a log tracking nutritional intake.

In other words, the app gives a robust outlook of overall health over time, which has made Fitbit a big contender in the space against Nike and others.

With the launch of the M7 motion coprocessor in the iPhone 5s, Fitbit has decided to offer “basic” tracking from the phone itself, likely with the intention to entice an upgrade.

The update comes just in time for New Years, as the pudgy masses resolve to lose the holiday weight.

Google updates Picasa, adds Google+ Auto Backup standalone Mac tool

Picasa 3.9 for Mac (about)

Google has been offering its standalone Picasa Mac app for years and while it may lack ease of use and elegance of Apple’s own iPhoto and Aperture software, by no means is it a slouch.

Matter of fact, I’ve been using the program for years as my primary point of entry for sorting, geotagging and organizing images in folders prior to importing them to Aperture for advanced touch ups and album management.

But aside from maintenance updates, Picasa for Mac spent much of 2013 unchanged in terms of features, so much so that I began to suspect that Google could perhaps discontinue it in order to make room for a standalone Google+ Photos app for the Mac.

Instead, yesterday’s update has proven there’s still life left in Picasa. In addition to a few new features and complementary fixes, the improved Picasa also brings out a brand new standalone tool allowing you to synchronize a batch of photos and videos residing on your Mac with Google+ Photos…(...)

Apple and Samsung again discussing patent dispute settlement

Apple vs Samsung (image 002)

Apple and Samsung are said to again be conferring over a possible settlement to their years-long patent dispute. According to a new report, the two companies are in “working level discussions” regarding a potential deal.

There are still major obstacles though, and the two firms have a lot of work to do in terms of narrowing their differences over royalty fees and patent access. Apple, for example, wants Samsung to pay up to $30 per device…

Flurry Finds Christmas App Download Spike Continues, But Lessens As People Get Used To Smartphones

apps1

Mobile analytics and ad platform Flurry has released its annual report on the state of app downloads over Christmas for 2013, and as is usually the case, consumers clearly went crazy for apps this year. Unwrapping a new iPad will inevitably prompt a spike in software downloads, but Flurry is finding that spike is starting to diminish year to year.

Overall Growth-resized-600App downloads broke records yet again for 2013, with an 11 percent improvement over total Christmas Day downloads in 2012. But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to past year-over-year increases. Between 2011 and 2012, for instance, download growth on Christmas exploded by 90 percent, while it increased 97 percent during the entire month of December year-over-year. This year, as mentioned, growth was only 11 percent between 2013 and 2012 for the holiday itself, and 25 percent for the month of December.

Flurry interprets this slow down in growth as a sign that the smartphone and tablet markets in developed markets might be reaching a maturation point – they avoid calling it a ‘saturation’ point, but it’s undeniable that that’s a fear many market watchers have had regarding the potential growth ceiling on device sales from leading smartphone and tablet makers in markets where those devices have been selling and selling well for nearly a decade now.

Slide3 new-resized-600Christmas Day downloads were up 91 percent vs. an average day earlier in the month, Flurry found, so there’s a sizeable bump on the day of gift-giving itself. Still, even that is down vs. previous years. In both 2012 and 2011 there was a more than twofold increase in the number of downloads of apps taking place on Christmas Day vs. other days in the first three weeks of December.

This mild plateauing of downloads isn’t necessarily a sign that smartphone growth is slowing, however. It’s possible that there’s simply less discrepancy between Christmas Day and the rest of the year because people are more used to the concept of app stores, and more likely to buy mobile software throughout the year than on a single day when surrounded by more tech savvy relatives who can guide them through the process. New device activations also still spike on Christmas, however, but it’s a less dramatic increase than in previous years.

It’s still likely worth the effort on the developer side to discount apps and offer sales that last through the holiday period, but the difference in volume between that period and the rest of the year might not justify such dramatic dips in software price anymore. It’ll be interesting to see if this continues, or if there’s a levelling off point where the Christmas app download spike stops decreasing year-over-year.

Marco Polo Is A Simple, Privacy-Focused App For Sharing Your Location

marco polo

A smartphone app called Marco Polo aims make it easier for users to find and meet up with their friends.

The basic mechanic of the app is pretty straightforward, and is indeed reminiscent of the children’s game Marco Polo. Instead of text messaging back-and-forth with your friends to find out where they are, you hit the “Marco” button to share a pin showing your location. Then the app shows you a list of your friends, and you choose who to share it with. (You can also add an image or a message to the pin.)

Once other users get notified about your location, they have the option to share their location back with you. And if someone hadn’t downloaded the app, you can still send them a link to your location.

There are, of course, many other location-sharing apps, and a broader category of similar apps under the horrendous buzzword “SoLoMo”. However, I haven’t seen anything with that works exactly the way Marco Polo does.

Co-founder Aneel Ranadive argued via email that the app “is more low key and less formal than texting, and less invasive than, say, turning on Apple’s Find My Friends or broadcasting to your entire network on Foursquare or Facebook.” Unlike Find My Friends, you’re not sharing your location on a persistent basis, and unlike Foursquare, you choose who you share with each time. He also pitched the app as part of a trend of people wanting to share more privately, for example with Snapchat.

The app actually represents a shift for the startup, which was previously known as Pinchit, and which started out as a daily deals site with seed funding from investor (and “Six Californias” advocate) Tim Draper, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and others.

Marco Polo has actually been available in for iOS and ANdroid for a little while now, but Ranadive said it’s only with the most recent update that the team trying to go beyond a small group of testers.

I tried the app out myself — none of my close friends are on it, so it didn’t have much utility in terms of actually meeting up, but it was still fun to see where Ranadive was at a given moment. And it’s as simple and “low friction” as he said, with only a couple of taps needed to share your location.

If you’re interested in trying it out for yourself, you can download the app here.

Are you jailbroken on iOS 7? Are the apps and tweaks installed via Cydia not showing up on your device? If you’re running into this problem, you’re not alone. I’ve received numerous questions about this problem over the last few days; so many, that I thought it would good to make a post and video on it for those that need help.

This means that one can easily add a shortcut to any app installed on device to any tweak or app that supports the FlipSwitch framework. And because the add-on uses a special two-letter naming system, you’re ensured that the application launch toggles will always look good and never out of place.

I’ve tested out FlipLaunch with the FlipControlCenter tweak that we just reviewed. Have a look inside to see how it works via our hands-on video walkthrough.(...)
