5 great iOS 8 extensions for you to try [Video]

5 great extensions

The ability of apps to work together by means of the new extensions feature in iOS 8 is one of the best new additions to Apple’s mobile operating system.

Like any new and highly anticipated feature, developers have begun to jump on the ability to add support to their apps. While there is no shortage of apps that feature extensions on the App Store, I’ve created a list of five extensions that I think are really great. Not only are they useful, but they highlight the power of inter-app communication.

Inside, I’ll show you five great extensions for iOS 8. Check out the video overview after the break.... Read the rest of this post here

Apple pushing Foxconn to hire aggressively to cope with strong iPhone 6 demand

foxconn

As Apple’s recently released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus continue to face strong demand from fans around the world, the Cupertino firm has reacted by pushing its favorite contract manufacturer, Foxconn, to hire more workers to help assemble the handsets, Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes reported Tuesday.

A large-scale aggressive hiring for Foxconn facilities in Shenzhen and Zhengzhou is currently underway, with sources noting that working on assembly lines is no longer as attractive as before for workers in China.... Read the rest of this post here

CCShuffle adds shuffle and repeat buttons to the Lock screen and Control Center

ccshuffle

While Control Center is a convenient place to quickly control a playing song, it still lacks some music controls. CCShuffle is a new jailbreak tweak that brings the much anticipated shuffle and repeat buttons to Control Center.

Developed by Charlie Hewitt, CCShuffle adds a shuffle and repeat button to the right and left of the media controls in Control Center. Originally, the buttons are only available in the stock Music app, but with this tweak, you can also use them from Control Center. Not only this but CCShuffle also adds both the buttons to the Lock screen as well.... Read the rest of this post here

Words for Evil is both an RPG and a word game combined

Words for Evil 1

Two of the things I like about a fantasy role-playing games (RPG) are looting and killing. Those are basically the best parts. Some games have even condensed their mechanics down to just those two features. What if there were a game that let you loot and kill, but you had to spell words in order to do so?

Words for Evil is just that. This iPad game combines the battle tactics of a good old-fashioned RPG with Boggle-style word finding mechanics. Find words to attack your enemy. If you are too slow, you’ll spell your own death.... Read the rest of this post here

A first look at TouchPal keyboard for iOS 8

TouchPal 1

I’ve gone through a handful of the most popular third-party keyboards for iOS 8 and each one has a little special something that makes it stand out from the rest. We’re not talking about simple color changes (although I do like those), but real functions that push them beyond the norm.

Apps of the week: GIF Keyboard, Fist of Fury, Fotograf, and more

Apps of the week

This week could not have been worse for Apple. The company felt the heat from users with bent iPhones, bugged iOS updates, and security exploits that can directly affect OS X. I’d be three bottles deep in whiskey by now. Not really. I’m so small that three bottles of whiskey would kill me.

Thank goodness for new apps and games to distract us from a crappy week. You can dive into a story-heavy game, reorganize your life with a productivity app, or simply check out a new way to share photos. How to customize or hide contacts showed in the App Switcher

Recent Favorites App Switcher

Along with iOS 8, Apple introduced a new feature in the App Switcher that allows you to have quick access to your recently contacted contacts, as well as your favorite contacts. In essence, this is a great feature that can save you time, but it arguably also is a feature that has nothing to do in the App Switcher to begin with. What if you only want to see your favorites in there? Or what if you don’t want to see any contact at all in the App Switcher? There is a solution.

In this post, we’ll show you how to select what kind of contacts you want to show in the App Switcher (favorites and/or recents) or how to hide these contacts altogether.... Read the rest of this post here

MyFitnessPal brings its data to iOS 8’s Health app in latest update

MyFitnessPal

As Apple earlier this morning began approving HealthKit-powered apps following yesterday’s release of the iOS 8.0.2 software update, makers of health and fitness software, life-tracking programs and food intake tracking apps are now releasing updates adding HealthKit compatibility.

Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker a free of charge iPhone and iPad app by MyFitnessPal, has been bumped to version 5.6.6, for example.

Taking advantage of Apple’s HealthKit in iOS 8 which makes it easy for supported health and fitness apps to work together and share data through the stock Health app, the refreshed MyFitnessPal app now lets you add your meal summaries and sync your weight with HealthKit, as well as add excercices from other HealthKit-enabled apps to your diary.... A first look at Swype for iOS 8

Swype Keyboard 3

Why type when you can swipe, indeed. I know that swiping instead of tapping is merely a fun feature and not necessarily a productive way to type. Nevertheless, I love to swipe. Sword-slashing Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance hits Mac App Store

Metal Gear Rising - Revengeance (Mac screenshot 002)

TransGaming, which specializes in video game portability technology, on Thursday released Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in the Mac App Store.

Originally developed by Kojima Productions and Platinum Games, Revengeance is technically still part of the Metal Gear universe, with one notable change: instead of the hide-and-seek approach that the original Metal Gear Solid popularized more than a decade ago, Revengeance files as a hack’n’slash game that puts you in the shoes of a cyborg ninja named Raiden.

Equipped with a fancy high-frequency katana blade, you’ll be slicing your way through the enemies amid a terrible conflict brewing between private military corporations (PMCs). The game is available in the Mac App Store for a promotional price of $24.99.... Read the rest of this post here

A rough week for Apple

Tim Cook angry pissed upset

Everything started so well for Apple this week. After the launch of the the company’s two new devices, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple revealed on Monday that this was the most successful iPhone launch ever, with 10 million units being sold during the opening weekend. The only thing that prevented Apple to sell more iPhones during that time was simply that they couldn’t make them fast enough. That’s a nice problem to have.

But then things started turning sour on Tuesday when the first reports of what is now commonly known and referred to as #bendgate emerged online. If the negative press about bendgate wasn’t enough, Apple shot itself in the foot on Wednesday when it released iOS 8.0.1, an update supposed to fix several bugs, but which turned out to be the biggest software release fiasco in modern Apple history.

With fanboys and Apple haters alike putting their own spin on both sides of the story, I thought I’d put some perspective to all this and share my thoughts on the situation.... Read the rest of this post here

A first look at MyScript Stack keyboard for iOS 8

MyScript Stack 1

When Apple first announced that it would allow users to set third-party apps as the default keyboard, I got pretty excited. I know it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but similar to having a multitude of pens in varying styles and colors, I like having options when typing. It makes it more fun.

MyScript Stack is another third-party app that is now compatible as a default keyboard for iOS 8. Although, I’d be incorrectly describing it as a keyboard since its main feature is that you can handwrite letters instead of typing them.... Read the rest of this post here

iOS 8′s battery shaming is a double-edged sword

iPhone 5 battery charging

As is always the case every time a new iPhone is released, or a major iteration of its software pops up on Apple’s servers, the planet goes into meltdown about battery life. It’s almost as predictable as Apple’s iPhone release schedule, and it’s getting old.

I was already pondering how Apple’s newly released iOS 8 was performing for people when I read iMore’s post covering its new battery shaming feature. Rene does a great job explaining how iOS 8 monitors app usage and then plots out a percentage of the battery drain that app has caused. The reasons for that drain are plenty, and the important thing to remember is that they’re not all bad.... Read the rest of this post here

Let’s Talk iOS 048: Analyzing the iPhone 6 and iOS 8

Three days with the iPhone 6

iPhone 6 display color

The months leading to the announcement of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus seemed to drag on and on, but the week following flew by. Within seven short days of reserving my iPhone 6 at my local Apple Store, I had it in my hands. It’s here. And it’s lovely.

Backing up for a second, it’s worth noting that I wasn’t one of those people that was hankering for a new iPhone. I certainly wasn’t desperate for one that was a great deal larger than my iPhone 5. That phone had been with me for two years, day in and day out. It felt like part of the family, and I’ll almost miss it now it’s gone.

It’s gone because I took advantage of my two-year contract’s expiration in order to get a new iPhone. More specifically, a 64GB Slate Grey iPhone 6.

This isn’t a review, by the way. It’s a largely incoherent collection of thoughts after a weekend with what will probably be Apple’s best selling iPhone ever. There are plenty of awesome reviews out there if that’s your cup of tea.

So let’s get started with my story.... Read the rest of this post here

Apple announces record-smashing ten million iPhone 6/Plus opening weekend sales

Tim Cook (iPhone 6 launch, Palo Alto Apple Store)

After announcing record pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus topping four million units in the first 24 hours, the Cupertino firm on Monday said it sold ten million units of both the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 during the opening weekend. On the other hand, unlike last year’s iPhones, the iPhone 6 has not yet launched in China, Apple’s second-largest market by revenue.

The figure breaks the previous record of nine million units held by the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c last year, though it must be noted that the iPhone 5s was not available for pre-order.

The new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were announced on September 9 and Apple started accepting pre-orders on Friday, September 12. Wallpapers of the week: Apple logo for iPhone 6

Jason_Zigrino_2014-Sep-20_splash

With new phone upgrades and additional screen sizes comes the struggle to find newly created wallpapers to grace our screens. While the iPhone 6 Plus is 1080 x 1920, standard HD resolution, the parallax effect will add additional pixels to any true iPhone 6/Plus wallpaper image.

My goal with the Wallpapers of the Week section is to bring iOS wallpapers to you on a weekly basis. More importantly, when new devices are launched, we try to have wallpapers at-the-ready. This week is our first posting since the iPhone 6 launched on Friday. With this post, you will find parallax-ready images for iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, and we still included the iPhone 5s.... A first look at SwiftKey Keyboard for iOS 8

SwiftKey 1

My brother is an Android user and I am an iOS 8 user. So of course he is always showing me things that he can customize on his smartphone that I can’t. One time, he showed me how he could swipe his finger across his keyboard to type words. “Big deal,” I said. “Jealous,” I thought.

Now that SwiftKey Keyboard is available as a default keyboard for iOS 8, I was quick to download it to see just how cool the feature really is. SwiftKey is mainly a predictive keyboard that learns your writing style and gives you suggestions for what you might want to say next. What you can do with your iPhone’s plastic screen protector

iPhone 6 plastic Free screen protector

So you just got your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. Or, perhaps you’re waiting for it to arrive via the mail. Whatever the case may be, you just got (or are getting) a new device, and you’re thrilled.

Now, the question that all of us have to ponder at some time during the day: What do I do with the plastic screen protector that wraps around my iPhone?

If you’re like most people, the answer to this question is simple: Remove it as fast as humanely possible, and let your hands enjoy the build quality and curves of Jony Ive’s latest creation.

But for me, and no doubt, others, the answer to that question is a tad more complex. Sometimes I find myself removing the plastic, yet at other times, I like to keep it on my device. I put together a little video that shows some of the ways that you can use the plastic protector to your advantage. It is free, after all…... Read the rest of this post here

First iPhone 6 drop-test videos surface

iPhone 6 (drop test 002)

As Apple Stores around the world opened this morning to the legions of fans and early adopters eager to get their hands on the company’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets, enthusiasts have already recorded first drop-test videos that provide non-scientific evidence as to whether the new phones are more easily damaged versus the previous models. I’ve included a nice drop-test video by YouTube users PhoneBuff who was among the first customers at Apple’s retail store in Australia.

I’ve also put in another clip of a brand spanking new iPhone 6 slipping out of its packaging and slamming onto the concrete — as the cameras were rolling — much to the horror of its proud owner.... Read the rest of this post here

A first look at Fleksy for iOS 8

Fleksy 1

One of the cool new features available in iOS 8 is the ability to set third-party keyboard apps as the default on your iPhone and iPad. I was quick to jump on that bandwagon. Fleksy Keyboard – Happy Typing was my first third-party default because, frankly, I wanted my keyboard to look like a candy store. It is a gesture-based, colorful, super fast keyboard for iOS 8 with autocorrect and word suggestions. I’ve been playing with it for about a day now and I’ve got some hands-on experience to pass along to you.... Read the rest of this post here

Apple said to have ‘War Room’ hunting for iOS 8 bugs on social media

Apple Store Front logo San Francisco

Apple is fairly well known for its over-the-top customer service, and we’ve come across a story that provides the perfect example why. Reddit user Kiggsworthy posted an anecdote in r/Apple today captioned “Pretty indescribable Apple service experience yesterday,” and we thought it was worth sharing.

Like many of us, Kiggsworthy was playing with iOS 8 yesterday when he came across an issue with Family Sharing that did not allow him to download content from his wife’s account. So naturally, he tweeted about his problem, and to his surprise, an actual Apple employee responded to his call for help.... Read the rest of this post here
